5 reasons you should invest in a music teacher

In a day and age where it has never been easier to find hundreds of video tutorials, blog articles and many free apps to aid learning, is paying for a private tutor still worth it? We think YES and in this blog post we’ll share 5 excellent reasons why an instrumental tutor is the best investment in your musical journey!

  1. Planned curriculum

An experienced music tutor will most likely have some kind of curriculum (or plan) when it comes to teaching repertoire and specific skills or techniques. This curriculum means that every new skill builds up from the one before. In short, your learning will progress in a way that makes sense and that feels just the right amount of challenging.

  2. Accountability

Learning on your own or using an app is great, until you lose motivation. You find that you’ll keep coming up with excuses for why you’re not practising or making progress. Having a teacher ensures you have weekly deadlines to work towards, and you become accountable not only to yourself but to your teacher as well. Your desire to please your teacher will get you practising!

  3. Tailored learning

Although a tutor will have a curriculum (whether explicitly stated or not), some tutors will be quite happy to tailor their plan to suit your particular tastes. This could look like playing a certain genre of music as opposed to another. In any case, your musical experience will become highly personal and relevant to you, and you will have more ownership of your own learning.

  4. Relationship with someone who cares

Apps and video tutorials can be useful but they are extremely impersonal. When you invest in a music tutor, you are not just paying for someone’s skills, knowledge and time. You are also paying for their support. In essence, your tutor is possibly your biggest critic but also your biggest cheerleader. Your tutor will remind you and congratulate you on your progress even when you feel like you are not making any improvements. Tutors care about the relationship you create to the music that you play, and we care that you love music as much as we do! For many students (especially children), a music lesson offers them a much-needed place to let off steam in a safe environment.

  5. Opportunities

A tutor will be aware of opportunities through their networks and experience. Such opportunities could be exams, performance opportunities, competitions and workshops. Preparing and attending events of this sort can provide extra motivation for learning and practise, so make the most of them when you get the chance!

So there you have it: 5 reasons why you should invest in a music teacher.
