All about the flute!
In this episode of Raising Musos, we’re diving deep into the world of the flute with our very own flute tutor, Jensen — a talented musician and second-year music student at UWA. Whether you're a parent considering flute lessons for your child or a curious beginner yourself, this conversation is packed with fascinating insights.
🎵 Why the Flute?
Jensen first picked up the flute after growing bored with clarinet — drawn by its shimmering sound and technical challenges. “It just floats above all the other instruments,” he shared. And yes, the piccolo is a favorite too!
🕰️ A 40,000-Year History
Did you know the flute is one of the world’s oldest instruments? Ancient versions date back tens of thousands of years. The modern concert flute, however, was developed in the 19th century by Theobald Boehm — a design that’s still used today.
🔧 What Makes the Flute Work?
Sound is produced when you blow across the embouchure hole — similar to blowing across a bottle. The keys change the length of the tube and allow different notes to be played. Jensen also explained the difference between wood, silver, and even gold flutes — and why some professionals play flutes that cost upwards of $100,000!
🎼 Meet the Flute Family
Beyond the familiar concert flute, there’s a whole family of flutes:
Piccolo – high and bright, but notoriously tricky
Alto Flute – mellow and rich, often with a curved headjoint
Bass & Contrabass Flutes – much lower and often used in larger ensembles
🎒 Beginner Advice for Parents
If you’re considering flute lessons for your child:
Age: Starting around 7–8 years old is ideal
Cost: A decent student flute can be found from around $700–800, or consider renting
Brands: Yamaha, Pearl, and Jupiter are great beginner options
Shops in Perth: Try Tempest Music (Como), Zenith Music (Claremont), or even Marketplace for second-hand finds (just check the service history!)
🧼 Flute Care & Maintenance
Students should clean their flute daily (inside and out) and plan for a service every 6–12 months. Avoid sugary drinks or food before playing — sticky keys are a real issue!
💬 Final Thoughts
Whether it’s for the sound, the challenge, or just the shine — the flute has a special charm. And through the care, passion, and guidance of teachers like Jensen, students at Music Makers Academy are discovering what makes this instrument truly magical.
