Debunking common flute myths
Welcome to the final episode of our Raising Musos flute mini-series! I’m Eliza, the director of Music Makers Academy in Joondalup, WA, and today, we're wrapping things up by debunking some of the most common myths about learning the flute. I’m joined once again by our resident flautist, Jensen, who’s been sharing his expert knowledge with us over the past three episodes.
If you haven’t listened to the earlier parts of the series yet, we highly recommend checking them out:
Episode 1: Starting Flute Lessons
Episode 2: Flute Techniques & Skills
Episode 3: Anatomy of the Flute & Maintenance Tips
Now, let’s dive into those flute myths…
1. The Flute Is Just for Girls
Verdict: FALSE
While many girls do gravitate toward the flute, this instrument is by no means gender-specific. With iconic male flautists like Sir James Galway and Emmanuel Pahud, the flute has a rich legacy across all genders. As Jensen puts it, “Music is for everyone.” And we couldn’t agree more.
2. You Need Big Hands or Long Fingers to Play
Verdict: FALSE
Flutes are designed with young learners in mind! With options like closed-hole keys and curved headjoints, students with small hands can play comfortably and confidently. It's all about finding the right setup and proper hand positioning — not hand size.
3. The Flute Is an Easy Instrument
Verdict: FALSE
While it may look simple, creating a clean tone on the flute takes serious skill and control. Producing sound involves lip shape, air direction, breath support, and diaphragm control. Like all instruments, it’s easy to start—but mastering it is a lifelong journey.
4. You Need Strong Lungs to Play
Verdict: FALSE
Flute playing is more about breath control than lung size. Good technique focuses on efficient air use, not power. While lung capacity can improve over time, what really matters is learning how and when to breathe for musical phrasing and tone.
5. You Should Start on Recorder First
Verdict: HELPFUL, BUT NOT NECESSARY
Recorder can be a useful stepping stone — it teaches basic music reading and breath coordination. But plenty of students start directly on the flute and thrive, especially with the right support. It’s totally possible to begin your musical journey on the flute itself.
6. The Flute Is Only for Classical Music
Verdict: FALSE
While often associated with classical genres, the flute is incredibly versatile. You’ll find it in jazz, folk, pop (Lizzo, anyone?), and even rock. From Celtic melodies to modern arrangements, the flute is more flexible than many realise.
7. The Flute Is Too Loud to Practice at Home
Verdict: FALSE
In the early stages, flute is one of the quieter instruments! While tone will project more with advanced technique, beginner flute practice is generally soft. With smart setup (like rugs or curtains to absorb sound), it’s absolutely home-friendly.
Final Thoughts
Flute may not be the easiest instrument, but it’s rewarding, expressive, and accessible for learners of all ages and sizes. We hope this mini-series has helped demystify some of the flute myths and inspired confidence in your child's musical path.
