Oscar | Piano

Oscar has been having piano lessons for a number of years. Other than learning pieces, doing exams and performing at our student recitals, Oscar enjoys creating arrangements of music he enjoys. Oscar tells us about his piano journey below and you can even listen to two of his arrangements!

What made you start learning the piano and what do you enjoy about playing it?

I had been taking keyboard lessons at school but really loved the sound of a piano so really wanted to start playing piano. I enjoy all the sounds the piano makes and being able to create my own music.

What is your favourite piece to play on the piano and why?

The Mandalorian theme tune because it is very dramatic and has lots of dynamics.

You often arrange your own pieces. What kind of process do you go through when arranging? (Do you do it all by ear, do you look up someone else's arrangement and base yours off that?)

I arrange pieces that I really enjoy the music of. Some I arrange by ear and some by looking up others’ arrangements.

What has been a highlight of playing piano since you started?

Recording the Mandalorian earlier this year and also performing a solo piece at school.

What are some goals that you are currently working on with your piano or with your music in general?

I am working towards the AMEB Grade 4 and also continuing to arrange music I enjoy.

You often play your pieces from memory when performing. How do you go about memorising your songs?

There is nothing I particularly do to memorise the pieces as I just know how they sound and which notes to play.

Other than The Mandalorian, what other songs have you arranged since?

Fast car and Hall of the Mountain King.

Well done Oscar, we can’t wait to hear your future arrangements!
